Walt Schmidt was born and raised in northwestern Indiana He is a graduate from Valparaiso University with a Bachelors of Arts degree. Walt built his Studio outside of Bloomington, Indiana in 1978. His enthusiasm for simple things that work well has led
to a dedication to functional ceramics for daily life. A love for hand tools and processes has fostered Walt's interest in blacksmithing and off-hand glassblowing. Working clay into usable objects must be done in adherence to the clay's own
timetables. For example: if the clay is too wet or too dry the next step in the process may not be possible . Like life, Walt finds clay continually full of surprises, never
knowing how an object will turn out until the kiln has sufficiently cooled to open, usually days after firing. The durability of clay, as well as the subtle depth and variety that can be achieved with glazes, keep Walt dedicated to gas-fired production
stoneware ceramics his patrons can count on collecting for years to come.
