Shelley Cannon Frederick is a native of Longview, TX. She was raised in
a creative atmosphere by parents that encouraged her artistic talents.
Shelley's father is an artist and has worked in architecture and
graphics. Because of her exposure to art and creativity, Shelley
followed this path in her educational career. She studied art at
Kilgore College in Texas and she studied life drawing and anatomy at the Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio. Shelley continues to pursue excellence in her field by participating in workshops. Some of those workshops have been presented
by artists such as Nita Engle, Judi Betts, Al Stein, Joseph Fettigus, and Homer O. Hacker. Shelley paints exclusively in watercolor. She likes watercolor because it has a transparent quality, allowing the artist to use layers of color combinations which
will let light pass through and reflect off the paper so the painting tends to 'glow' from within. Many subjects spark her interest, but Shelley's special joy is painting young children caught in their own world of surprise. She accepts commissions on a
limited basis to do portraits of children from photographs. She will also do commissions of one's pet, house or special place. Shelley believes her talent is God-given and wants to share His gift with others whenever possible.
Shelley has displayed her work at both national and local juried shows
and art exhibitions. Her recent work, "Hot, Hotter, Hottest" won the
Outstanding Watercolor award in the 75th Hoosier Salon. In addition to
this distinction, Shelley received the Grand Champion and 1st Place
Watercolor prizes in the NSDAR's 1998 national art competition and had
her painting "The Reenactor" exhibited in Constitutional Hall,
Washington, DC Her painting "Florida Dreaming" has been purchased by the National Art Museum of Sport and is a part of their permanent
collection. Another work, "First Lady of America", was purchased by the
Allentown Art Committee and is hanging in their gallery in Buffalo, New
York. Her studio is located in Southern Brown County. She currently exhibits her work at Spear's Gallery, Brown County, IN. Donna's Framing, Nashville, IN and the L & L Gallery, Longview, TX. Shelley teaches watercolor at the John Waldron Art Center in
Bloomington, IN as well as workshops in and around the area. You may contact her via internet at shell_art@iquest.net or by writing to;
