Tara J. Fuller

A little about the artist

Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, Tara J. Fuller was surrounded by art. Though a lover of all New York has to offer, her dreams were often filled with images of open fields and woods to explore. In 1996, Tara relocated to Bloomington, Indiana. Tara painted numerous landscapes and florals, before realizing her true passion - animals & people. Capturing the essence of living creatures successfully on canvas, is what pushes Tara to work harder with each painting. Working primarily in both oil and acrylic, she strives to achieve striking realism in her work. Tara is a self-taught artist who attributes much of her success to the endless hours spent studying and painting. Tara J. Fuller is the winner of the June 2002 Platinum Award For Excellence, for her work as an animal artist. Tara prefers taking her own photographic references. Her computer knowledge enhances her ability to compose her paintings. She is able to manipulate digitally, and when satisfied with her composition, begin the painting process. This preparation gives Tara the advantage of "seeing" how the final painting will look. Aside from painting, Tara also enjoys traveling, gardening and photography.

Specializing in commissions, Tara paints pet portraits in oil for people around the country. Tara's work has been featured on Wildartlink, Society of Animal Artists, and in her local and regional newspapers.

Long-Haired Chihuahua

I photographed this prize winning Chihuahua at the Kentuckiana Cluster Dog Show in 2004. Working in alkyd oil, I immortalized him.

Spring Lounge

I took about 185 pictures of this cat, and fell in love with this pose. I usually have a neutral background, but I loved the chair. This painting was published in the Times Mail Newspaper in May 2004.

Western Lowland Gorilla

I have been studying gorillas for the past year. I am a strong believer in an artist really knowing their subject before painting them. After over 1500 pictures, and countless hours spent sketching and observing gorillas in Louisville, Cincinnati, and Florida zoos, I was able to create this painting. I began with a study painting. After working out several ideas, I painted this portrait. It is one of my favorite paintings
